Carnegie Prep is excited to offer a Writers Workshop this summer to REACH Prep Middle School students, focusing on non-fiction personal essays.
Week 1 is open to all 6th & 7th graders and Week 2 is for 8th graders.
Each week, students will be divided into 2 sections per day – each section meeting for 1 hr and 45 mins. The class is structured to include 45 minutes of synchronous teaching time followed by one hour of independent work/teacher ‘office hours’ where the students will work on a writing project that they present on the last day of class.
Each five-day workshop is devoted to mining personal anecdotes, identity and worldview in order to craft a well-written narrative that could be used for secondary school applications, scholarships, etc. Curated selections from non-fiction essays by Ada Ferrer, Junot Diaz and James Baldwin would serve as exemplars of the form. By the end of the week each student will have written several short essays and have started developing a longer piece.
WEEK 1: July 26-30 (6th & 7th graders only)
WEEK 2: Aug 2-6 (8th graders only)
REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.
