Description
Joel Brusewitz brings a unique blend of high-level policy experience and classroom mastery to Carnegie Prep. A Johns Hopkins graduate (M.A.T) and Teach For America alumnus, Joel’s background includes a U.S. Senate internship and years of success teaching Advanced Placement courses. His expertise is further backed by his experience as a trained AP Reader, giving him insight into what it takes for students to achieve top scores.
Joel is perhaps best known for his innovative approach to curriculum; his Criminal Justice elective, which merged investigative work with case law, was featured nationally on NPR. At Carnegie Prep, Joel specializes in tutoring college-level Economics and Political Science, as well as AP US History, Government, and both Micro/Macroeconomics. He adheres to a “listen first” philosophy, ensuring every session is custom-tailored to the student’s specific learning style.
Beyond the classroom, Joel is a former Division I athlete and marathoner, as well as a guitarist and singer in the Baltimore music scene. He lives in Bel Air, MD, with his wife and two sons, fueled by a passion for travel, literature, and very strong coffee.

May 5th Test Date
Course Description
This four-class course will serve as an excellent review of all the material and skills that are assessed on both the AP U.S. Government & Politics exam AND the AP Comparative Government & Politics exam. Half of the course will be focused on AP U.S. Government and the other half will be dedicated toward AP Comparative Government. There will be graded practice questions and short answer responses will be commented on and reviewed throughout the course.
The AP U.S. Government & Politics portion of the course will not only cover all the key content material, but will inform students on how the College Board exam questions are formed and how to write the most effective and high-scoring responses. Along with learning how to approach the multiple choice questions, the course will focus on how to use the core foundational documents of the U.S. Government and the core Supreme Court cases in response to the four FRQs (Free Response Questions).
The AP Comparative Government & Politics portion of the course will not only cover the six core nations that make up the heart of the content on the exam, but will focus on how the conceptual aspects of the course link to each of the core nations.
